Open-end zipper performance depends on the complete closure system. The chain, slider, insertion pin, retainer box, tape, fabric, lining and sewing process must function together.

Approve the zipper in a finished sample before bulk production, especially for long outerwear, coated products and two-slider constructions.

Selection by Manufacturing Application

Separating and Two-Way Classification

A separating zipper uses a lower pin-and-box assembly and may have one slider.

A two-way separating zipper uses two separate slider bodies, detaches completely and allows the lower section to open.

“Separating – Bottom Opening” must not be used as one filter value. End construction and slider configuration are separate attributes.

Slider and Pull-Tab Terminology

The slider is the mechanical body that opens and closes the chain. The pull tab is the part held by the user.

Product data should distinguish:

• Single-slider zipper
• Two-slider or two-way zipper
• Single-pull slider
• Double-pull slider
• Special-design pull tab

Nylon Coil and Molded Plastic Classification

Nylon coil zippers use a continuous spiral chain. Molded plastic zippers use separate plastic teeth attached to the tape.

These systems require different slider geometries. A product whose title says molded plastic while the description says nylon must be physically verified before classification.

Reverse Coil and End Construction

Reverse coil describes the orientation and appearance of the spiral. Open-end describes the lower pin-and-box construction.

A zipper can be both reverse-coil and open-end, but reverse construction alone does not confirm separating or two-way operation.

Metallic-Look Classification

A metallic finish may be applied to nylon coil or molded plastic teeth. These products must not be classified as genuine metal chain.

Use separate fields for:

• Visible Finish: Standard, nickel-look, gold-look, brass-look, copper-look or another finish

Coated Open-End Zipper Production

TPU- or PU-coated zippers may be used for technical jackets and rainwear. Inspect the film through sewing, slider movement, bending and care testing.

Water protection must be assessed across the zipper tape, stitch holes, slider junction, pin-and-box assembly, top and bottom ends and main fabric.

Pre-Production Inspection

• Does the functional zipper length match the pattern?
• Are the top stops aligned on both garment fronts?
• Does the pin enter the retainer box fully?
• Does the slider run without excessive force?
• Does the chain reopen behind the slider?
• Do both sliders operate correctly on two-way products?
• Does the tape remain flat after sewing?
• Does the pin-and-box assembly remain stable after care testing?

Rules for Zipper Sets

An open-end zipper set should enter this category only when every included zipper is open-end. Mixed-end packs should remain in the workshop-set category.

The written set contents should identify:

• Total zipper quantity
• Every included length
• Chain construction
• Single- or two-slider configuration
• Color distribution
• Fixed or variable package contents

Common Manufacturing Errors

• Do not describe an open-end zipper as separating at both ends.
• Do not combine separating and two-way functions in one filter.
• Do not combine slider count and pull-tab count.
• Do not publish conflicting chain materials without physical verification.
• Do not classify metallic-look nylon or plastic as genuine metal.
• Do not use reverse coil as an end-type value.
• Do not claim full waterproofing without technical testing.
• Do not begin bulk production without sample approval.
