Jacket Zippers for Coats, Parkas and Outerwear

How to Select a Jacket or Coat Zipper

A suitable outerwear zipper must match more than the visible length of the garment opening. The end construction, zipper gauge, tooth material, slider count, tape color, fabric weight and intended use must also be checked before purchase.

The zipper used for the main front of a coat does not perform the same function as a short pocket zipper. Main closures generally require an open-end structure, while pockets and auxiliary sections normally use closed-end zippers.

Quick Outerwear Zipper Selection Table

Application Recommended Zipper What to Check
Main front of a jacket or coat Open-end separating zipper The two zipper halves must detach completely at the bottom.
Long coat or parka Open-end or two-way zipper Choose two sliders when the lower section also needs to open.
Jacket or coat pocket Closed-end zipper Do not confuse a pocket zipper with a main front zipper.
Children's jacket or vest Lightweight coil or molded open-end zipper Measure the actual garment pattern rather than selecting only by age.
Workwear and frequently used outerwear Heavy-duty coil or molded plastic zipper Check the slider, tape, insertion pin and retainer box.
Outdoor and technical jacket PU- or TPU-coated zipper A coated zipper does not waterproof the completed seams by itself.
Leather or decorative jacket Metal or metallic-look zipper Confirm whether the teeth are genuine metal or only have a metallic finish.

Open-End, Closed-End and Two-Way Zippers

Open-End Separating Zippers

An open-end zipper uses an insertion pin and retainer box at the bottom. When fully opened, the two zipper tape halves can detach completely. This is the standard structure for jackets, coats, parkas and vests that need to open fully.

Compare other options in the open-end separating zipper collection.

Closed-End Zippers

A closed-end zipper remains permanently connected at the bottom. It is commonly used for jacket pockets, inner pockets, sleeve openings, ventilation panels and other sections that do not need to separate.

Short fixed-bottom options are available in the closed-end zipper collection.

Two-Way or Combi Zippers

A two-way zipper has two sliders and can open from the top or from the lower section. In a two-way separating model, the zipper halves can also detach completely.

This structure can improve comfort on long coats and parkas when sitting, driving or walking. A standard separating zipper and a two-way separating zipper are not the same product.

Jacket Zipper Tooth and Chain Options

Nylon Coil Zippers

Nylon coil zippers use a flexible spiral element. Their lightweight construction makes them suitable for everyday jackets, sportswear, children's outerwear, pockets and other textile closures.

When a coil zipper is intended for the main front closure, verify that the product has an open-end bottom system. A closed-end coil zipper of the same length cannot perform the same function.

Browse additional options in the nylon coil zipper collection.

Molded Plastic Zippers

Molded plastic zippers use individual plastic teeth formed onto the zipper tape. They are also informally called chunky or bone-tooth zippers in some markets, but the teeth are not made from natural bone.

#3, #5, #6, #9, crocodile-tooth and metallic-look descriptions may refer to different tooth profiles or product families. Check the exact slider compatibility, end type and product specifications before ordering.

See the molded plastic zipper collection for available tooth profiles.

Metal and Metallic-Look Zippers

A genuine metal zipper uses separate metal teeth. A metallic-look zipper may instead use nylon coil or molded plastic teeth with a decorative metallic finish.

These constructions can differ in weight, flexibility and sewing requirements. Check whether the product page states genuine metal teeth, metallic tooth color, coated molded teeth or metal-look coil.

Material groups can be compared in the zipper types by tooth material section.

Coated and Water-Repellent Zippers

PU- and TPU-coated zippers may be selected for outdoor jackets, rainwear, technical garments and equipment where resistance to surface moisture is required.

A coated zipper does not make the entire finished garment waterproof. Stitch holes, zipper ends, seams and other joining areas may require separate sealing.

How to Measure a Replacement Jacket Zipper

Close the original zipper and place the garment on a flat surface. Measure the functional section from the top stop to the bottom stop, retainer box or lower end mechanism. Do not automatically include the extra tape used for sewing.

Approximate Length Common Application Selection Note
12–20 cm / 4.72–7.87 in Pockets, inner pockets, sleeves and auxiliary sections Usually used with a closed-end construction.
25–40 cm / 9.84–15.75 in Baby outerwear, children's vests and cropped garments Confirm whether the garment must separate completely.
45–55 cm / 17.72–21.65 in Children's jackets, short coats and vests Measure the actual finished opening.
60–75 cm / 23.62–29.53 in Adult jackets and medium-length coats Check whether one or two sliders are required.
80–100 cm / 31.50–39.37 in Long coats and parkas Consider a two-way zipper when the lower section needs to open.

Measurement warning: These ranges are general guidance. Always confirm the actual garment pattern or the original zipper before ordering.

Main Jacket Zipper vs. Jacket Pocket Zipper

  • Main jacket zipper: Usually open-end and approximately the same length as the front opening.
  • Jacket pocket zipper: Usually shorter and closed-end.
  • Long coat zipper: May be a single-slider separating zipper or a two-way model.
  • Detachable hood zipper: May be open-end or closed-end depending on the garment construction.

Common Selection and Installation Mistakes

  • Do not treat open-end and closed-end zippers as interchangeable.
  • Measure the functional zipper length rather than the total tape length.
  • Do not order a standard single-slider zipper when the garment requires a two-way zipper.
  • Do not assume that every slider with the same size label fits every zipper chain.
  • Do not describe metallic-look plastic teeth as genuine metal teeth.
  • Test the zipper on a production sample before placing a large order.
  • Confirm stock status, package quantity and minimum order conditions on the product page.

Common Applications

  • Everyday jackets and coats
  • Parkas and long outerwear
  • Children's jackets and vests
  • Work jackets and uniforms
  • Outdoor and sports jackets
  • Rainwear and technical outerwear
  • Jacket and coat pockets
  • Detachable hoods and panels
  • Leather and fashion jackets

Buying Checklist

  1. Will the zipper be used for the main front, a pocket or another section?
  2. Does the application require an open-end, closed-end or two-way zipper?
  3. What is the functional zipper length in centimetres and inches?
  4. Is nylon coil, molded plastic, genuine metal or metallic-look construction required?
  5. Does the garment require one slider or two sliders?
  6. Do the tape and tooth colors match the garment?
  7. Is the product offered from stock, wholesale or as custom production?
  8. Has the package quantity or minimum order requirement been confirmed?

Frequently Asked Questions About Jacket and Coat Zippers

Which zipper should be used for the main front of a jacket?

If the jacket must open completely, use an open-end separating zipper. A closed-end pocket zipper should not be selected as a standard main front closure.

Is a separating zipper the same as a two-way zipper?

No. A separating zipper allows both tape halves to detach at the bottom. A two-way zipper has two sliders and can also open from the lower section.

How should jacket zipper length be measured?

Measure the functional section from the top stop to the bottom stop, retainer box or lower end mechanism. Do not automatically include the extra tape used for sewing.

Should an open-end zipper be used for a jacket pocket?

Jacket pockets normally use closed-end zippers. Open-end zippers are intended mainly for front closures where both garment sides must separate completely.

Should I choose a nylon coil or molded plastic jacket zipper?

Nylon coil zippers are generally more flexible and lightweight, while molded plastic zippers provide a more visible tooth profile. The correct choice depends on fabric weight, design and frequency of use.

Are bone-tooth zippers made from real bone?

No. Zippers informally described as bone-tooth zippers normally use molded plastic teeth rather than natural bone.

Does a waterproof zipper make the entire jacket waterproof?

No. A coated or water-repellent zipper may reduce surface water entry, but seams, stitch holes, zipper ends and other garment sections may require separate sealing.

Can jacket zippers be purchased individually?

Sales conditions vary by product. Some models are available in small quantities, while others are supplied wholesale or through custom production. Check the individual product page for the exact quantity.
